Richmond Secures Nearly $43 Million for Pioneering Metrowalk Phase 2A Project

Updated: Sep 1

Hello Richmond Community,

It is with immense pride and excitement that I share some transformative news for our city: we have been awarded nearly $43 million in funding for the Metrowalk affordable housing project!

This massive award dovetails perfectly with my core vision for Richmond: Development WITHOUT displacement. Metrowalk checks all the boxes our city needs:

-Enhancing Richmond’s infrastructure

-Increasing housing stock that Richmond residents can afford

-Focusing city resources on the revitalization of downtown Richmond

-Promoting use of public transit and investing in our Green energy future.

What is the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program?

The Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) Program, backed by California Climate Investments, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through projects like affordable housing and eco-friendly transit.

In its recent seventh funding round, the program had $750 million available. Out of 53 project submissions, only 21 were selected for funding, totaling $757.4 million. This competitive process aims to fulfill strict criteria, including a minimum 50% of funds for affordable housing and benefiting disadvantaged communities.

What Does This Award Mean for Richmond?

150 Affordable Homes: In collaboration with Pacific West Communities, Inc., the project will see the construction of 150 affordable homes next to the Richmond BART station.

Transit-Oriented Development: The project aims to make commuting easier, thereby allowing residents to lead a car-free lifestyle and promoting walkable communities.

Community Spaces: The development will feature seating areas, office space, a computer room, an exercise room, and laundry facilities on each building level.

Station and Infrastructure Improvements: The Richmond BART station will receive upgrades including new fare gates, one mile of Class IV bikeway, pedestrian improvements, and the completion of the Richmond Wellness Trail, which will connect the BART station to the ferry at the waterfront.

This groundbreaking initiative wouldn't have been possible without the outstanding teamwork and efforts of city staff, local organizations, and community members. Special thanks to our City Manager, Shasa Curl, and team members Lina, Nannette, Susan, David, & Nora for their tireless efforts.

What Comes Next?

While we revel in this news, the hard work continues. Expect updates on construction timelines, community meetings to gather your invaluable feedback, and of course, information on how to apply for these new affordable housing units.

Please stay tuned for more details and thank you for your continued support. Together, we are not just building homes, but a more accessible, beautiful future for Richmond residents.

In Community,

Mayor Eduardo
